Spring roundup: Mischief, Cuts and Campaigns

United Kingdom, 24.05.2011 19:24

Mischief: In response to the nationalist hype, several hundred people gathered for a "Never Mind the Royal Wedding" street party on Manzil Way to create "some mischevious DIY fun". Elsewhere various other mischevious creatures were using unorthodox methods to spread radical messages.

Cuts: As youth centres closed, in spite of protests and lobbying, campaigners drew attention to the impact cuts will have on refugees, asylum seekers, and disabled people while the traditional Mayday workers' demo had an anti-cuts theme.

Campaigns: Three Christian peace activists are on trial for taking action against Aldermaston, a nuclear weapons lab near Reading. Meanwhile monthly demos in support of the migrants locked up in Campsfield "House" continue.

Misc: There was also a review of the latest OARC film screening. For other condensed local info, see the events calendar, (which now works with more programs and gadgets) and recent local blog roundup.

[B] Die Orphs - eine Zwischenbilanz

Germany, 24.05.2011 14:39

SCPD's Strange New PR Campaign

Santa Cruz, CA, 23.05.2011 20:40

Brent Adams writes: The police department has begun a very strange public relations campaign lately and I'm a bit confused about the message I should be getting. As we all know, the economy is hurting and difficult cuts are being felt in most areas. The City of Santa Cruz is grappling with this reality and has just settled on a medium-range funding plan (massive cutbacks). There is increasingly a large amount of available office and retail space downtown and it wouldn't be a stretch to say that the economic climate is desperate, which is why I'm a little surprised at what I've been seeing from our local police department.

The South Central Farmers: The Dream Reborn

LA, 23.05.2011 16:10

The fight for the Farm is on again. The Los Angeles Times editorial board announced its support for restoring the South Central Farm (see below), once a fourteen-acre miracle of family agriculture in the heart of industrial Los Angeles. What the Times isn't saying here is that the land that was the Farm is in escrow according to reports received by the Farmers, with only four months left to find a way to return the Farm to the community before the land is sold. The Farmers are again relying on Angelinos to come to the aid of the legendary urban farm.

Activists Call on Mayor and Council to Provide Housing For All

DC, 21.05.2011 22:07

“Believe it or not,” said Councilmember Michael Brown, “there are some of my colleagues that believe that there are no more poor folks left in the District of Columbia. If that’s your mindset then you’re not going to think these cuts are that devastating when in fact they are.” April 1, Mayor Vincent Gray submitted his budget to the D.C. Council. The D.C. Fiscal Policy Institute noted, “Mayor Gray’s budget proposal contains close to $190 million in cuts, most of which would fall on human services and other low-income programs. Two out of every three dollars in cuts comes from human services even though that part of the budget makes up only one out of every four dollars overall.” Audio

Upper Big Branch Report

DC, 21.05.2011 22:07

"…more than a year after 29 men died in the Upper Big Branch mine, there is strong evidence that Massey has not changed the manner in which it operates its mines. On April 29, 2011, after receiving tips on its hotline, Mine Safety and Health Administration (MSHA), conducted an impact inspection and found 20 instances of aggravated misconduct at Massey subsidiary Inman Energy’s Randolph coal mine in Boone County, West Virginia. During the safety blitz, the agency issued 20 withdrawal orders and five citations. Eleven orders had to do with violations of the ventilation plan at the mine. Inspectors found that the company was illegally operating two sets of mining equipment simultaneously and cutting, mining and loading coal from the same section. Combustible materials had accumulated in active workings. The company failed to use ventilation curtains, necessary for proper ventilation to prevent mine explosions. Inspectors found insufficient water pressure on the continuous miner to suppress dust and to prevent sparking and methane ignitions." Epilogue

Event: Fifth Annual Social Uprising Resistance & Grassroots Encouragement Film Festival

Portland, 21.05.2011 19:52

Event: The Fifth Annual International Social Uprising Resistance & Grassroots Encouragement Film Festival is taking place now! It runs from May 17th through May 23rd, 2011. Admission is free and snacks are free... because everything in the world should be free!

Mission Statement: Peace, Equality and Solidarity. Although political protests give us the opportunity to unite our thoughts in opposition to the route which our governments are taking us, many of us all over the world have come to the realization that the lack of peace in the world and the problems that we see increasing every day have a foundation deeper than the Republicans, the Democrats, or a few select multinational corporations. What we face are institutionalized problems, problems which can only be confronted at the root, researched and solved by imaginative and broad based, non-violent social movements - not ballot boxes.

Please visit: http://www.WeSurge.org and click on "Calendar of Events (Downloadable)." Love and Solidarity!

Update on Wednesday's Water Rate$ Hearing

Portland, 21.05.2011 19:52

Subject: Update on Wednesday's water rate$ hearing: The good, the bad & the ugly. A big thank you to all who came to the water rates meeting on Wednesday. For those of who couldn't attend, here's a break-down of what happened.

THE GOOD: Turnout at City Hall was terrific. Council Chambers was packed with people who are supportive of avoiding the unnecessary "treating" and covering of Portland's historic open reservoirs for contaminants that do not exist. Over 100 people attended , including a mayoral candidate. Near the beginning, a speaker asked people to stand up if they were attending in support of keeping the reservoirs open (and stopping unnecessary construction). THE ENTIRE CHAMBER (except for Water Bureau employees) STOOD. Numerous groups testified against the planned 85% water/sewer rates increase over the next 5 years -- 45 people signed up to testify including Siltronics, Portland Bottling Co., Yo Cream, Alsco Linen, a low income housing representative, Sierra Club Columbia Chapter, Physicians for Social Responsibility and many, many more.

THE BAD & UGLY: Commissioners gave the green light for water-sewer rates to go up nearly 20% this year. They approved a 6 percent sewer fee hike and a water rate hike of approximately 12 percent. Council is expected to officially approved the rate hikes next Wednesday. An audit recently found that the Portland Water Bureau has spent millions of dollars on projects other than water and sewer operations. This is in violation of Oregon state law. You may recall that the Oregonian Editorial Board recently called for regulatory reform in an opinion piece on LT2. The question is why isn't the Portland Water Bureau working in support of community will, our good water, and LT2 regulatory reform.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: Call each city Commissioner's office and tell them to stop reservoir construction projects.

Here's a brief KBOO piece by Joe Meyer on Wednesday's rate hearing:

Palestinians and Allies Mark the Nakba Across the Globe

San Francisco Bay Area, 21.05.2011 09:22

May 15th marked 63 years since the Palestinian Nakba (catastrophe). In 1948, more than 750,000 Palestinians were permanently displaced, with more than 500 Palestinian villages depopulated and destroyed. In San Francisco, Lebanon, Egypt, Syria, and across the globe, Palestinians and solidarity activists commemorated the Nakba. In the West Bank and Gaza, thousands took to the streets to demand an end the occupation. Israel forces responded with live gunfire killing at least 16 protesters and injuring hundreds.
